Free Thai–English rental contract for Chiang Mai: mountain loops, mileage limits, off-road use, monthly renters and the 2025 rules. Word and PDF.
Chiang Mai rentals travel. A scooter rented in the Old City may spend the week climbing Doi Suthep, riding to Pai, or doing the whole Mae Hong Son loop. That puts more distance, more brake and clutch wear and more crash risk on your vehicles than a beach town does, and your agreement should say where the vehicle may go and how far.
This free agreement is in Thai beside English and follows the national standard contract for car and motorbike rental. The builder on this page is set to Thailand. Add your details and download it as Word or PDF.
Highway 1095 from Chiang Mai through Pai to Mae Hong Son runs about 245 km on a winding two-lane road through steep hills; counts of its bends range from 762 to "over 2,000" (Highway 1095, Wikipedia). The full Mae Hong Son loop usually comes back via Mae Sariang on Highway 108.
Three clauses do the work here:
The agreement also bans taking the vehicle out of Thailand, which matters in a province that borders Myanmar. Crossing a border with a vehicle needs separate permits and your written permission.
Under the 2025 rules, if the vehicle can't be used for more than a day because of an accident or for repairs, you must provide a replacement of the same or a similar model, unless the renter's unlawful act caused it. If you don't, the renter can end the rental and get back the unused rent. A scooter that breaks down in Pai is your problem to solve, so think about your permitted area, your recovery arrangements and your emergency repair limit (the amount a renter may spend on a roadside fix and claim back) before you agree to long trips.
Northern Thailand's burning season is real for operators: in late March 2026, PM2.5 in parts of Chiang Mai stayed above 125 µg/m³ for four days running (The Star), and in October 2024 floods inundated the city when its main river overflowed (The Star). If a monthly renter leaves early because of the smoke, the early return clause applies: notice, then a pro rata refund. The force majeure clause covers floods, storms and government orders, with rent for unusable days agreed fairly.
If you rent by the month to students, teachers or remote workers, use the monthly mode: rent in advance on the same day each month, 7 days' notice for early return with a pro rata refund, and no early termination by you unless the renter breaches the agreement. Check the motorbike category on their licence or IDP: Thailand accepts IDPs under the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions (Department of Land Transport), but a car-only permit doesn't cover a scooter. More on long rentals in how to run a monthly rental business.
Rental cars should be registered as rental cars (รย.11, green plate) in the area where you rent them out. Chiang Mai has two provincial land transport offices, Office 1 at Nong Hoi on the Chiang Mai–Lamphun road (address and phone) and Office 2 at Mae Hia (details), plus district branches. See green, yellow or white plate for what registration involves.
For other provinces, start from the main free bilingual rental agreement.
RoveHQ fills in this agreement from each booking automatically, including the permitted area and mileage allowance. The renter signs it on their phone, and their passport and licence details are read from a photo, so you can see the licence category before you hand over a bike for the loop. Start free with RoveHQ.
